This department is one of the humanities departments specializing in the study of the fundamentals of Islam from both doctrinal and intellectual perspectives. It was established in the academic year 1989–1990. The department is located on the second floor of the College of Islamic Sciences building in the Sabaa Abkar complex, and has graduated thirty-one classes to date.

The department offers undergraduate studies in both morning and evening sessions, in addition to master's and doctoral programs. It accepts graduates of secondary school in its various branches (literary, scientific, and Islamic) through morning, evening, parallel, and special admissions. The academic year is divided into two semesters.

The department also offers a variety of services to students, including free tuition, student affairs, library access, and sports and extracurricular activities. The department is headed by Professor Dr. Raed Mohammed Al-Obaidi, with Dr. Khudair Abbas Mishaan serving as the department's secretary.

The department grants bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, within the general specialization: Philosophy of the Foundations of Religion, and the specific specialization: Islamic Creed and Thought, which prepares its graduates to work in the fields of teaching in Islamic sciences and Arabic language, as well as employment opportunities in government departments.

  • Supporting religious and academic institutions with specialists in Islamic doctrine and thought, preparing them with a doctrinal preparation based on transmitted and rational evidence, teaching the sciences of the Holy Qur’an and the purified Prophetic Sunnah, and distinguished by moderation, far from extremism and fanaticism, who confront those who raise doubts and call for deviation.
  • Supporting educational institutions with educational specialists and preachers armed with Islamic legal, doctrinal, linguistic and modern sciences in a manner that is compatible with the requirements of the modern era, by adopting scientific research and diverse fields of community service.
  • Strengthening Islamic and national identity and embodying pride in it through scientific Islamic educational curricula, and practical practices and activities that contribute to preparing a learner who respects the opinion of others based on civilized dialogue with diverse religions and cultures.
  • Promoting Islamic morals and authentic Arab-Islamic social values within the framework of social transformations, in order to protect society from various doctrinal and intellectual deviations.
  • Extending bridges of cooperation with diverse academic and cultural institutions to work on improving learners and preparing specialists who serve the country and its people within disciplined Islamic, doctrinal and intellectual frameworks to achieve quality higher education and specialized academic accreditation.

Goals:

  • Instilling Islamic beliefs in the hearts of learners and protecting them from being influenced by misguided and deviant beliefs and ideas, and providing them with modern cultures to familiarize them with human rights and public freedoms in Islam, both in thought and practice, and ensuring this is included in international charters.
  • Preparing specialists in the fields of Islamic doctrine, thought, and calling to God, from holders of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees, to support religious, educational, and social institutions.
  • Preparing a generation of teachers, preachers, orators, and preachers who contribute to building a unified society that is advanced in its knowledge, character, and morals, and supporting it in faith, science, and culture, and participating in its prosperity and progress through scientific research and serving its development and the requirements of its labor market by building research and consulting projects that help solve its problems.
  • To promote respect for Islamic cultural heritage, its unity and its eternal Islamic message, to develop virtues, to spread tolerance in societies, and to combat extremism, fanaticism and hateful sectarianism.
  • Contributing to building and preparing the individual to serve the Islamic community, building academic capabilities to develop the scientific movement, improving reality, standing up against temptations, and confronting trials and tribulations.
